After multiple game cancellations against Washington and Arizona State due to positive COVID tests, the Cal Bears finally kicked off the 2020 football season last Sunday in Pasadena. The end result, unfortunately, was a 34-10 drubbing at the hands of the UCLA Bruins. The surge in COVID cases nationally continues to raise the threat of cancellations for the remainder of the season. Bears Coach Justin Wilcox was upbeat about these developments stating, “Hey, we have not had a one-loss season since 1950. Who wouldn’t be ecstatic about being on pace for a one loss record in late November.” Quarterback Chase Garbers was more circumspect stating, “It would mean a lot to put up a win, but hey if the defense can finish the season only giving up 34 points, then you gotta give to those guys.” Garbers may get his chance the Friday after Thanksgiving when the Bears host the Big Game against Stanford that has given up 35 points in each of its two losses.
