Berkeley Petitions Utah for Desert Monolith: Viewed as Practical Alternative for Bridge Sculptures

In an effort to simultaneously repurpose art and provide a cost effective replacement for the recently removed bridge sculptures, the city of Berkeley has requested the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources transfer the recently removed desert monolith. After bidding adieu to the Big People statutes, the Arts Commission agreed the monolith would be a perfect fit for the city. The Commission Chair noted, “Nothing screams Berkeley like guerrilla artwork found in the desert.” Further, the Commission noted that a twelve foot tall piece of metal would be very cost effective to maintain. The Commission did suggest that the monolith be secured to the bridge to prevent it from being taken by metal poachers. In its budget analysis it stated, “With a couple of Kryptonite locks and cables we should have that baby secured to the bridge.” Utah officials were unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
