Sanctuary City Resolution Passes Unanimously
Republican senators who voted in favor of the impeachment of Donald Trump are facing a backlash in their home states. Fervent party loyalists have vowed to avenge what they describe as the “Great Betrayal.” Many senators have been censured by their state party and reported receiving threats to themselves and their families on social media. In response, the Berkeley City Council unanimously approved a resolution providing sanctuary to any Republican member of Congress seeking to avoid the wrath of their party base.
Mayor Arreguin stated, “This resolution is another example of Berkeley stepping up and showing compassion to those facing persecution.” Council-members were somewhat conflicted about providing special dispensation to US Senators who some described as a “privileged class.” To avoid the perception that they were catering to elites, the resolution includes a stipulation that congress members would not be allowed to park and reside in RVs in the city limits. Senator Burr expressed “disappointment” that Berkeley was “cancelling” free RV parking for senators but expressed gratitude for providing a safe haven. The City Manager emphasized, “Our aim is to ensure they are in market-rate units as we need the revenue.” The resolution also states those seeking sanctuary will be required to were masks in public. The mayor emphasized, “we dont want to leave anything to chance when it comes to public safety.”
The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce endorsed the resolution stating, “in addition to the humanitarian aspects this resolution, it creates new social synergy for the city. For example, with advent of Outlier, the new dating platform for principled conservatives, we see Berkeley’s diversity getting wider and deeper. Its multiculturalism at its best.” We also hope they will have the opportunity to spend quality time at Trump Commons.
Minority leader Kevin McCarthy suggested that republicans taking advantage of the sanctuary policy “will really be missing out on the culture and ambiance of Bakersfield, but they are probably better off staying out of town.”
